What an amazing afternoon we had sharing really important content with women from the community at our free women’s self defense class. This was by far our best such event to date!
The day kicked off with Jessica Heymann from the Montgomery County Victim Service Center. Jessica went into great detail informing attendants about the do’s and don’ts in abuse or assault situations, and what to do immediately following. The Victim Services Center (VSC) is a non-profit organization located in Montgomery County, and provides free and confidential comprehensive support services to crime victims, their families, and significant others. They also offer prevention education and risk reduction programs, as well as training for professionals who work with victims of these terrible crimes.
After Jessica completed her presentation, it was time for the instructors at Action Karate Plymouth to teach some practical self defense techniques to the class. We had a blast teaching striking basics, assertive communication, and body language techniques. We also reviewed pressure points and grappling basics in a fun, easy-to-remember format for anyone to recall and execute.
We wrapped up the day with Angela Moore from Damsel in Defense. Her presentation included all of the really COOL products offered by Damsel to help the everyday woman be prepared – in style! – just in case the need arises. “Our mission is to equip, empower, and educate women to protect themselves and their families,” the Damsel website states. “Our Independent Damsel Pros are not only arming others and experiencing financial freedom, but also offering empowerment and healing to those affected by assault.”
We’d like to express our enthusiastic gratitude to the organizers of the seminar: Bobbi Thomas of Action Karate Plymouth, Jessica Heymann, and Angela Moore.
This event was such a success, and we plan on hosting two self defense classes per year going forward. Keep your eyes on our calendars for announcements of class dates in March and September of 2018. These events will be open to the entire community, and we hope to see you all there!
